Disinfecting and Deodorizing Sponges:
Don't throw out the kitchen sponge that smells like last night's salmon. Soak it in water spiked with white vinegar or lemon juice, then heat it on high for 1 minute in the microwave. (Use an oven mitt to remove it.) This will also disinfect any sponges you used to wipe up the juices from a raw chicken.

I used to do that. It works! Lately, I just run them through the dishwasher with my dishes each time I run it. That works, too.
I didn't think of the dishwasher. I did see you can wash Baseball caps in the dishwasher. It holds it shape in the top rack.
